Weekend Warrior

Posted in A Word with tags , , , , , , , , on October 7, 2012 by sylus

Aaaaaaand, another weird weekend. I should have this thing figured out by now, plans never go as planned, and I will never stay on target by playing on the one toon I plan on playing… This weekend is no different! My PLANS were to get my little Orc monk to level 50… He’s barely 42. My PLANS were to spend Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, Saturday evening, and Sunday afternoon, and Sunday evening gaming to accomplish that goal… I played a little Friday evening, then fell asleep much earlier than planned due to my wife having a migraine and I was tired from wrangling my kiddos(not complaining, I’d do anything for my wife and kids, just pointing out this wasn’t in the plan) Saturday afternoon I never got around to the computer due to odd nap times and a wedding, Saturday evening is where this story gets interesting, and this guy gets some wow monk time. So, as some of you are aware of, I’m a huge transmog fan. Seriously, HUGE. Now, when I sat down Saturday evening, I had a clear three hours ahead of me, three hours I would devote to doing nothing but Q’ing up for the random dungeon finder… Right after I fly out to stone talon mountains to start doing the quests to get the sweet shoulder pads from the quartermaster. Yeah, go figure I DIDN’T Q… I just keep right on questing… And pet battling… And logging back and forth working the AH… Seriously, I am a sad, sad altaholic/ADHD gamer. This really shouldn’t surprise me. But you have to admit, my transmog monk gear looks pretty sweet.

20121007-225123.jpg Lets move onto Sunday… So, I woke up Sunday morning feeling like crap. My allergies were destroying my face, and my head was pounding. I let my wife take the kids to church while I stayed home, sleeping. Lets fast forward a few hours, I’ve slept off my headache (side note, let’s just say the headache was entirely my Caffiene addicted brain was deprived, I had runout of my drug of choice and not had any coffee yet. Caffiene deficient. Some ibuprofen, coffee, and sleep turned half of my battle around. Now, I enjoyed a good lunch with my family, put the kiddos down to bed for their afternoon nap, booted up my trusty wow machine, went to the refrigerator to get a caffeinated beverage, some pretzels, and sat down to finally tear through the 8 levels I’m lacking in my level 50 goal for the weekend. I start up Netflix, I’m addicted to cheesy sitcoms, and double click the ol’ wow icon. I input my gaming info, and watch the connecting screen…. And I continue to watch the connecting screen. Ok, what gives? I pull up the wow forums to see what’s going on. Low and behold this takes place… Dualshockers This was their official statement, courtesy of Nethaera:

12:17 p.m. PDT – We are continuing to work to resolve the connection issues that many players are experiencing while attempting to log in to the game. We do not have an ETA for when this will be resolved but will provide an additional update at approximately 1:15 p.m. PDT. —————————————————————————————————- 11:15 p.m. PDT- We are currently experiencing an issue after the performed rolling restarts that is affecting the authentication servers. We are currently investigating this issue and will provide further updates within an hour.

And what was suppose to be quick rolling restarts ends up being them fixing back doors, stopping general mayhem at the core, and in the process, leaving the servers down for a few hours. Now, technically it wasn’t the servers that were down. Just the authentication servers. Now, I wasn’t in game, so that screwed me over. After about fifteen minutes I went down stairs, watched five episodes of the Big Bang theory, then the kids were up, my day was game, set, match. So, here I am, sitting at 42, where I should have been at least 50. Oh well. Wow is of course not everything, heck for me it’s barely anything most of the time. Life comes first, but honestly, screw you hacker guy for ruining my Sunday afternoon game time.

UPDATE
I found this article this morning that tracked down one of the perpetrators of my crappy Sunday afternoon. Read this link, it is amazing. And I would say to him, seriously? Blaming blizzard for your asshatery? Screw you guy.

Screw you guy. Screw you, and get off my lawn!(just the hacker bs guy),

Mobile Auction House For Dummies

Posted in Discussion with tags , , , , , , , , on September 17, 2012 by sylus

When I think of fun things to do on my phone, playing wow usually isn’t the first thing to come to mind. Sure, I think of Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, heck, even Angry Birds Space(I’m a fan of angry birds, ok?) but WoW? Nope, can’t say I’ve really thought of WoW on my phone.

At the beginning of the summer I was looking for a way to spend some time playing wow, but with two kids at home, running a swimming pool, and wanting to spend my “free time” pursuing family and friends, I was in need of some Azerothian time during my day.  I found this through the mobile auction house app on my iPhone. Spending five minutes here, five minutes there, I was able to amas mountains of gold. Considering I had never seen anything north of the 5k gold for each flying skill I had raised, my summer high of 50k was really an accomplishment for me. I say summer high, because I don’t have that in gold anymore. Granted, I’ve spent quite a bit of that on mounts, ie chopper, traveling tundra mammoth, and a few others, raised flying skills on a few toons that needed it, and spent way, way to much on transmog gear… I’m ashamed to say I paid 6k for the blade of wizardry on my bank alt… Yeah, sad, I know. Now, I am still playing the AH, and really enjoying it. The market seems to have slowed down on some things, and I think that will pick up after MOKFP drops next week, bit I’m still making gains. I’m sitting on too much inventory in my opinion, and on a few really pricy items that will sell, but will take some time to move, and I have 13K gold right now. Granted, there are many people sitting at gold cap. I’m nowhere near gold cap. No. Where. Near.

So, why should you listen to me about how the mobile auction house has made me gold? Well, because I’m just doing this part time. I rarely hit my 200 transactions per day limit, yes there is a limit, and I go days at a time without posting to the MAH, and I still have gold. If I can do this, what can a dedicated mobile auction houser do? Well, they are probably already gold capped. Let’s take a look at the MAH on my iPhone.

This is the basic home screen. On it you will see several pieces of information. Browse, My Bids, My Auctions, and Create are the main headers, while information about your current auction house activities are listed below. The interface is pretty self explanatory to be honest.

Some of the tricks that have been helpful in making money using the mobile auction house aren’t really tricks at all. Any idiot can do these few things, and make money hand over fist. Now, this may sound stupid, but here is the number one, biggest trick to make money using the auction house. It isn’t professions, it isn’t farming and selling, it’s buy low, sell high. There you have it. The biggest secret to making money. Buy low. Sell high. Now, I know what you are thinking, if everyone knows this, why aren’t they all doing it? One of the biggest advantages to the mobile app over the in game client, is that you can do it anywhere. Are hitting on a train on your way home? Pull it out. Are you in your office at work looking busy? Pull it out. Are you sitting at your computer playing wow… Okay, so it won’t work if you are actually logged into the game, but enjoy that time. Spend it playing, not worrying about the auction house. It will still be there when you log off.

Don’t go going ho, buying up every scrap of a single item on your first day. Gt to know your market. Start small. Pick our two or three items that you think you can successfully buy at a steady price, and mark it up several times per day, knowing that at times you will have a ton of that material lying around, and no, it doesn’t move everyday of the week. Some days will be slow, and all you will do is buy. Don’t fret. That is why you need to take a week or two to know the market. Know other sellers who are attempting to do the same thing. I have a few sellers for transmog goods on my server who always, always have the same set prices on certain sets. I’ve learned this, and now know where to set my prices when they come up without even looking at what he is selling at the moment. Trade goods are better money makers in the long run, even if they don’t net the huge amounts as fast. Over time, these will be your biggest markets.

I don’t have secrets really, in fact, I’ll tell you my number one seller. Embersilk cloth. Plain ol’ simple embersilk cloth. Yup. I buy any piece that sits below a set value, them resell them just above that value. Let’s pretend it’s 3G 50s. (it is 3G 50s) now, if I buy up every piece, every time I log in to the mobile ah, I have a Crapton of embersilk. I never post as much as I took off the market either. Creating a huge amount on the ah just drives prices down in the long run. No, I sit on my stockpile, selling it slowly. Some days you will sell more than you started with, other days you won’t. In the end, it pans out if you set your price points correctly.

The mobile auction house has been a way for me to spend some time in Azeroth, without dropping everything I am doing to go to my desktop, log in, avoid getting trampled by toddlers, while still feeling like I am contributing to my warcrack habit. It did the trick for me this summer, kept me playing while others had moved on, and honestly became my game within a game. There would be almost whole weeks where the only wow time I got was playing the mobile AH…

So there you have it, the mobile AH in a very short, very small package. If you have any questions about my experiences with the mobile ah, please leave a comment and I’ll try to get back with you ASAP. Now that it’s free, you have no excuse to not get out there and make some gold! Just don’t forget your buddy,

Writers block… Or the Post that Needs to be More than one Post

Writers block… Or the post that needs to be more than one post

Greetings friends, bloggers, and crazy readers. I’m hoping your weekend was as good as mine. In preparing to write this post I had jotted down several notes throughout the week, but never got to putting them together into a coherent post until this weekend… Yeah, I procrastinate sometimes, what of it? as I was digesting the notes I had accumulated i realized that this would either be one gigantic metric crap ton of information, or I could break it up into three or four posts over the next week. Of course, this was before my epic evening Saturday night.

So, on the downside, you don’t get to hear about my “away from wow, wow time” post about the mobile AH, or my “transmog for dummies” post, or even my ” Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects review. ” but that’s okay, Saturday was my most eventful day in wow. Period. Sort of.

Let me back up a few days to Thursday night. As Fik stated on Friday, we rolled through our old stomping grounds tearing up Gruel and Magtheradon, then ripping apart Kara to get my gun, jerk wolf finally gave er up! That got us both fired up to do some old raid content. We sent out the word, and were rewarded with all of the FortheHorde crew showing up, along with some longtime friends, Ace from Repgrind, Lyssianna from Dots and Hots, and Orange Slice from Orangeslice> Other Sodas. We destroyed the place on ten man mode. Honestly, I had never seen the content, so I was super excited to FINALLY down the Lich King. Yes, we did ICC. I know, I know, its only an expansion late, it’s not like I had never seen Black Temple…(I haven’t finished that place…ever.) Or the Eye…(I hadn’t downed KT until Sunday)… but you get the point. It was something that needed to be done, and we did it. That’s how we roll. After destroying Lich King, we tromped down to the Obsidian Sanctum and got Pie his drake for OS3D. That was a blast, and one I will be doing weekly until I get that drake, and weekly still until all of my boys get it as well. I am a mount whore.

Speaking of Mount whores, I got mount number 119 yesterday, finally earning exalted with my guild and picking up my ugly scorpion of doom. He;s pretty cool, but he’s no raven lord. Sunday was our good friend Spiffie’s birthday, so we rolled into the Eye to down KT. Good times. We gathered a guildie, along with Pie, and rolled through like we owned the place. Low and behold, we DID own the place. No Ashes of Alar, but it was still a blast.

Now, I know this seems like such a “cop out” post. Yes, I had a blast this weekend playing wow like I hadn’t in a very long while. In fact, the last time I played as much with a group WAS Burning crusade… maybe a little bit in wrath, but not nearly this much during the cataclysm. Ironically, this was the expansion that really drove me forward lore wise. I loved the books written during this expansion. The Shattering and Thrall:Twilight of the Aspects were two amazing reads. I flew through them both.

I’m excited to see what Panda brings to the mix. I love the casual way things are headed, they fit my playstyle. I look forward to being able to solo more old world content. As a hunter, soloing old stuffs is fun! That’s how this orc gets most of his transmog stuff. So, look forward to some very fleshed out posts in the coming weeks. I’ve got some good ones on tap between now and the launch of panda.

Time for bed,

Welcome back to Monday folks! Look on the bright side, this week, if you reside in the U.S., you have the day off for Labor day. If you live elsewhere, sorry, welcome back to work. On Saturday, 3/4theHorde Got together while pie traveled south to visits family. Nimrock and I met up with him at one of the local Mexican establishments for dinner. Good food, good friends, and talking yours truly into playing D&D over the Internet makes for a great evening. It just sucks our other 1/4theHorde (Fikkle) is not just all the way north in Canada,  he’s even FURTHER north than usual. Who knows, if all goes as planned, we’ll be traveling to Northland next summer for a true Cana-Shenanicon meetup.
Back to WoW. As I stated in last weeks post, I am in love with the gold sink/time sink that is transmogrification. Seriously, I have multiple “outfits” for each character that I play/bank with ,and usually switch them up at least weekly… Sad I know. I wanted to take a minute and show off some of the great looks I’ve achieved over the past few months since transmoging became a thing.
First off we’ll start with my main Gozz. I’m a fan of red on my hunter, so I have a few red sets, one my self titled dragon hunter. I love the shiny red plate look with the dragon gun from BRD. My only regret is finishing the quest in SMV that gives the all red dragon head helmet years ago, before transmoging… So I can’t fully complete the look I want. Oh well.
Next is his take on the deadly gladiator set. The shoulders and helmet are the defining pieces of this set, and then throw in the org tabard and the horde bow…. S. I. C. K. Not to mention his rare Hydra pet, that can now be my tank solo pet!
Next is my two banker toons, Vos and Jesuit. Vos has spent some gold on his outfit, but with the cash he’s brought in, I’m okay with it! Here is his Silvermoon Vigilante look.
Next is his Templar Set, complete with Blade of Wizardry and His Tome of Auctionhouseing.
Next up, my bag man. He’s the guy that puts together all of the raw materials I find into bags. Bags=gold atm for me. Anyway, here is his Silver Thread set.
Finally, the character that has been through the most changes over my years of wow. He’s been an undead rogue, a gnome rogue (sad but true), a female orc rogue, a female bloodelf rogue, and now finally, has come full circle, an undead rogue. Just typing that makes me hate myself and the amount of money that has went into just race changes with this toon… not to mention server changes, and faction changes… I should quit while I’m really behind… Anwyay, here is Sylus in his newly minted Guild Colors PVP Sickle Set.
As you can see, I’m pretty sold on Transmoging. I want my gear to look how I choose, not how some dev thinks my “high end” armor should look. Some of my favorite pieces are random drops and quest loot. Those daggers Sy is sporting come from rep… from the walrus people.. I forget their name off the top of my head. What I’m saying is, they are sick, and easy to get, not heroic-hardmode-haters-gonna-hate-mode-82-man-raid content.
I really want to see some of your transmog sets. Leave us some links to your armory pages. Who knows, I might come up with something nice for my favorites.
It’s past my bedtime,
OldManSy

Tauren, Orcs, and Pandas, Oh My!

Posted in Achievements, Patch Notes with tags , , , , , , , on August 27, 2012 by sylus

Welcome back folks! Yes, yes, yes, you are seeing this correctly. No your feed readers aren’t going crazy and lying to you, we are truly back! The timing is perfect. We all quit writing on FortheHorde at the end of Wrath/beginning of Cataclysm, and now, with the incoming panda expansion, the timing is perfect to dust off our WordPress account and get our minds ready to be blown… Minds ready to have been blown? Minds ready for blowing? Anyway, grammar is still a bit rusty, give it a few weeks, it might come back… Then again, this is OldManSy… It may never have been there in the first place. Bunny trails, where was I?

So, with a new redone website, Forthehorde Reforged, we’ve brought back all of your favorite bloggers from before, with a scheduled format ready for your Internet entertainment. Of course I’m back, but do you remember the rest of the crew? They’re all back as well. Nimrock’s back and ready to swing the grammar-hammer, Pie’s ready to bring his thing, and Fikkle’s back with his distinguished, classy Canadian vibe. (eh?aboot?moose?hockey?eh?) yeah, “eh” is in there twice.

With 5.04 hitting tomorrow, it would be perfect to bring out some class guides, glyph guides, talent specs for the x class, but let’s be honest, why should we reinvent the wheel? There are so many good sites out there doing just that. Let’s face it, we aren’t that site… However I WILL give you some links to show off to you that:
A) I can read,
B) I can do a good google search, and
C) I do still know where to find the best Internets. Yes, internets.
Warcraft Hunters Union has a great guide to paladins…. Seriously, are you really going to just believe me? Duh, it’s a hunters site, as expected the guide is aboot the hunter class in 5.04. Great tips on glyphs, new rotations, the simplified talent trees… Er, not trees, but um… What are they calling them now? Talent choices? Either way, you know what I mean.
Ok, for times sake, and not wanting this giant wall of text to get much bigger, go to your usual sites,Wow Insider, ten ton hammer, MMO champion, whatever works for you. Now I can get back on track for a decent welcome back, intro post.
I’d love to tell you a tale of how Sylus and Gozz, my two main wow toons from back in the day, took vacations, traveled the world, met new people, but in reality they were working the taco stand behind Garrosh’s pad in Orgrimmar. Seriously, that guy can put away the tacos. But in all honesty, I think I am the only one of the four of us that didn’t let his account go inactive in the time from the end of Wrath to present. I didn’t play nearly as much as I had in the past, what with having our second child, working what seemed like nonstop, and coaching, gaming took the backseat. Let’s be honest, with this current expansion, it will also take the backseat for the most part. The bright side, is I can do alot of reading up on the game in my downtime, and then my gaming sessions, albeit fewer of them, will be more focused and informed, ready to tackle things to gain content for the blog.
Honesty, this was what Cata was like for me…

Deathwing’s breath smells horrible, one of you guys should get that guy some mints… oh crap, he’s right behind me isn’t he???

Now, during the cataclysm expansion I was pretty much playing as a loner. I got into a very large guild that I thought wouldn’t mean anything to me in the long run, but lo and behold I’ve met some decent people. None of whom I would place at the level of friendship I share with these blogger guys, but good people still the same. I’m currently an officer in that guild, and enjoy helping young budding hunters learn the craft of huntering, and the discouragement of the huntardering. I can honestly say I know my class. I love being a hunter, even if I was never end game raiding, I held my own in 5 man content, and really enjoyed the “End Times” heroics. The lore in those instances was amazing. I finished up lore master, increased my mount count to 115, and fell madly in love with transmogrification…. Madly… Deeply… In love. Honestly, transmog was why I started doing lore master in the first place. I would see gear, ask where it came from, and time and time again, they would tell me they got it as a quest reward in x zone. So, thank you Blizzard for letting me throw money at you to make my gear look awesome… I have all of my bank bags full, and have taken advantage of the massive gold sink that is void storage. Thanks again for that. Honestly, that is what kept me around. It was something I could do by myself, with my messed up short time framed schedule. I wasn’t interested in leveling alts, in fact, I deleted more toons during this expansion than ever before. I’m looking forward to more solo content for my main, as well as rolling a few alts in the process, but that will be another time, in another post.

Guys, we’re glad to be back, and we look forward to hearing how everyone has been in the blogosphere while we were away. Stop by, say hi, and remember, we’re here For the Horde!~OldManSy

The End has Come… and Gone.

Posted in Cataclysm, Discussion with tags , , , , , , , , , , on October 13, 2010 by sylus

The End is Here! 4.0.1 is upon us! The time for making amends has come! Woe is me!

Okay, so maybe that’s a bit dramatic. As many of you have experienced first hand, yesterday Tuesday October 12, 2010 Patch 4.0.1 dropped. This is the big precursor patch for Cataclysm that makes sure everything is ready for the big release. all of the class changes, talent changes, user interface changes, and general newness has entered the world of warcraft. Yes, it is VERY different. It is a bit scary, even for a five-year vet like myself, but with a bit of reading, some time messing around with target dummies or in the field, and I’m sure all of us will be back on our feet dispatching homies with prejudice. ( I think I heard that in a rap song)

I’ve been a bit bored of Wow in recent months. I was even considering that I might have grown up a bit and needed to move on permanently from wow. I took most of the summer off, not even logging in the entire month of June, and finally letting my account lapse in July. Around mid september I picked the game back up, very casually. I play only in the late evening after my daughter is in bed, and only if all of my work is done and the wife doesn’t want to watch some tv. (we’ve gotten hooked on netflix and television seasons.)

So, my first impressions of wow 4.0 are as such:
The first thing that struck me was how fun the new talent trees look. Take my rogue for instance. The tree descriptions AMAZE me. Fancy words like Assassin, Swashbuckler, and Executioner… SERIOUSLY. My rogue has been 80 for over a year, and has sat there, content in junk gear not being played. Rogue was a huge love for me in wow for a long time, but it was lack luster at 80 for me. Now I’m totally wanting to play her.

The next thing I noticed was my hunter. Yes, yes, the tree’s are pretty much the same, BUT I have a new game mechanic, focus. I also have HUGE stables!!! I can keep up to five pets ON ME, and TWENTY in the stables!!!!! I must set up a good BM spec and go out and round-up EVERY PET I’VE EVER DREAMED OF USING!!!!  I’ve been a hunter through and through, now I see myself playing Gozz, and at least 2-3 other hunters as well! (I have a 56 troll hunter with a full set of Gladiator waiting for him at 60, a worgen, and an undead hunter with my internet namesake waiting on Cata!)

Thirdly( is this even a word?Grammar Hammer ruling needed please.) the graphical overhaul. The new water/lava effects are very well done, and just like other graphical changes was much-needed. I had to bump my rig back down a bit, but my computer could handle the graphics, but not at the frame rates I like to see. Either I’m stuck getting a smaller monitor(BOO) or finally updating my rig… (How can I get this one approved by the committee…aka wife…)

Fourthly, This has my interest peaked again. That’s the end all at the moment. If this game can keep me happy, keep me around, keep my friends playing, then I will be here…. Well, at least until the spring of 2011… Then the inner nerd inside of me that lives in a galaxy far far away just may take over… I’m just saying… Wow Vs. SW…. No contest. Especially a Bioware MMO. KOTOR I&II were AMAZING. But for now, Blizzard is doing a good job of bringing me back in. Good on ya Blizz, good on ya.

Also, if this didn’t interest you, Here’s a Pony.

Sylus Returns… Sort of?

Posted in A Word, Leveling with tags , , , , on September 24, 2010 by sylus

This week was great. I’m settling into my real life routine with the new job and family life, and even found some world of warcraft time! I was able to log in, play a bit, and have decided that the unusual play patterns I’m going to ahve will best be spent playing lower level characters that can be logged in and out at will, rather than being stuck in a raid or instance for hours on end. So, introducing Turas, with the long U sound.  (Too-ras)

My HU-MAN rogue may appear to be of the alliance… but my mind doesn’t work that way… I’m an “RP” guy. My alliance rogue is human… but not working for the alliance. He dispises King Varian Wrynn. His father was banished from Kalimdor and was never seen again. Turas has vowed to find him and has left the safety of Stormwind to venture forth, making allies where he needs, despite their factional alliances. Anyway, look for more from my “Not -so-alliance” friend. Also, it was great to see you Fik, Duke, and Kev. All win my friends. All win.

From the Blue,
~Sy
