Ashes of Tirisfal Recruiting.

Posted in Guild, Pie, Real Life, Recruit a Friend, Recruiting with tags , , on May 13, 2009 by forthepie

Are you a player who would love to raid in a close knit guild that is more worried about you as a person and less if you are the best theorycrafter out there? Do you want to raid but aren’t willing or can’t put 4 hours a night or 4 days a week into raiding? Do you understand what true altism is and how it can’t really be cured?

If you answered yes to several of those questions then Ashes of Tirisfal may be looking for you. You’ve read about the guild on this blog. You’ve laughed with us as we detailed our shenanigans, now you can perhaps be part of those shenanigans.

Before the mad rush to apply occurs let us be clear. AoT is not a hardcore raiding guild. We are a hardcore “family” guild. Above all else, we don’t want guild drama, unless it’s why we can’t discuss House, M.D.’s new developments because Fikkle watches it a season at a time and doesn’t want spoilers. Or…did Han shoot first? Or possibly Picard or Kirk? In other words, we take no drama or candle!

We sometimes have to cancel raids because real life comes first. We sometimes do odd things like roll up alliance toons and go crazy with them. We laugh, we joke on each other in guild chat and on vent. Sometimes we do goofy things like face pull bosses. Or go AFK in the path of PATs.

What we need, for 10 man raids:

We need a tank or two and a healer or two and about three DPS.

But we would really love to have great people who won’t mind transferring or rolling up a new toon and joining in the fun. You see, with our guild, you usually have a few of us with multiple 80′s, so we have some flexibility with our needs.

What say you?

Entering the Service

Posted in Guild, Recruit a Friend on January 28, 2009 by Nimrock

Nimrock sent an orc scurrying on his way to the Festival Harbinger and wondered idly if he had chosen the right profession.

Another young hordling approached and he started his speech.

“It’s that time of year, Pwnsauce! The Cenarion Circle invites all denizens of Azeroth to…” but he was cut off.

“lulz ur gay” the mohawked Forsaken youth screamed.

“…We invite all denizens of Azeroth to partake in our celebration of the Lunar Festival.”

“just gimee questz i need g” he started bouncing in circles around Nimrock.

Nimrock sighed and his large shoulders slumped lower.

“So be it, find the Festival Harbinger. Earthmother go with you.”

The undead creature immediately ran away, in the wrong direction. As Nimrock was watching him bounce down the lane, begging everyone in his path for money, a horn blew. Nim spun around to see a large force riding through the main gate of Orgrimmar. At the lead of the procession were two orcs. One rode a war kodo and was followed by a cat with glowing blue eyes, the other rode a raptor and, based on the totems and ritual objects slung on his back, appeared to be a shaman. Also in the procession Nim could see a mage, more preoccupied with himself than the parade, a blood elf priest on a kodo and quintuplet tauren riding in single file (to hide their numbers). In the back Nimrock could even see a dwarf and a human, both paladins, apparent recent additions to the ragtag band. He waved and the shaman beckoned him over.

“Perhaps you’d like to join us, commoner?” the orc growled. “We could use one of your bulk to hide behind when the arrows start flying.”

Nimrock scratched his beard and nodded.

“Will there be fire?” he asked.

The shaman and the hunter nodded.

“Will there be fighting?”

Again they both nodded and began to grin.

“Will there be drink?”

They both nodded and began to laugh heartily.

“Well, in that case..FOR THE HORDE!!”

Hi, I’m Nimrock!

As you may have heard, I’m the new guy here at 4tH. Many thanks to Fikkle and Sy for allowing me to set up shop here and a big thanks for the great intro!

I thought I’d take a minute and introduce myself.

I’ve been playing wow since March 05. Sy in fact was one of the people who introduced me to the game. I’m what some call a casual, some call softcore and some call a nub. There are days I do more crafting than fighting. I’ve also been known to adopt new players and show them the ropes. I like RP.

Nimrock was my first character. I levelled prot nearly the whole way and but for a short fury stint at the end of BC, I’ve been a tank. In keeping with the tradition here I’m also a confirmed altaholic. The full list bores even me, but the main toons I play are a 70-ish resto shaman, a 70-ish farmer (i mean hunter) and a 60′s boomkin. I’ve dabbled in the Death Knight but lately he’s festering in the Marsh.

I hope to bring my own perspective to 4thehorde. I’ve got some tanking ideas to share. I’d like to start writing about some of my experiences adopting newbies. Maybe a few commentaries on guild happenings. I might even sprinkle in some RP. I’ll leave it up to you as well. What would you like to see from the new writer here? Maybe some inside scoop on Fikkle and Sy?
Feel free to comment here or send me an e-mail: Nimrock4thehorde@gmail.com

Thanks for having me guys!

Gert Gets De-frobed and the Final Double Ding

Posted in Alts, Paladin, Pie, Random, Recruit a Friend on January 26, 2009 by Kor

Since Pie hasn’t yet posted about his Pally’s recent changes, I’m usurping his natural right to blog about it, claiming the requisite 5 day rule.  (Said 5 day rule exists somewhere and now the onus is on you to prove that it doesn’t exist.  Anywhere.)  Anyways, ‘he’s’ gone through Blizz’s new Character re-customization procedure (read: De-frobed).  Pie’s main is the sturdy Orc Hunter of old, but ‘he’s’ been running a Pally lately, attempting to get ‘him’ to end game to give us more tanking options.  But since ‘his’ early days in Silvermoon, Gertbfrobe has been a staunch Blood Elf MALE Paladin (well, as male as Blood Elves can be to begin with).  But now, Gertbfrobe went in for ‘his’ surgery and has come out of the operating room as a smexy BElf chick.  So smexy in fact, that a certain other Blogger who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty (cough*Sylus*cough) has been whistling at ‘her’ during instance runs.  And by ‘her’ I mean Piepal of course, our new FEMALE BElf Paladin.  ‘She’ is now trucking along quite nicely in Northrend, currently sitting at 72 I believe.  So if you’re oot’n'aboot on the Blogoshpere, stop in at ‘For the Pie’ and give a little /whistle to Piepal.  Although, all you buggers may be disappointed… Rumour has it that a certain Nuggerfrumper is pretty smexy himself, and already has his foot in the door.  Just ask Jaina.

So the impetus for this post was my getting caught up on all of the podcasts that I’ve missed out on.  I have been delinquent in keeping up on them, and I’m pretty sure I had about 8 or 9 episodes of TNB to listen to, so its been a lot of Bre and Fim lately… Not that there’s anything wrong with that…  Anyways, funny thing.  I started listening to episode 27, in my car, while waiting in line for my standard Double Double (its a Tim Horton’s thing) when Fim conducted the intro to the episode.  He offered his guests a coffee, and after Bre pointed out to him that ‘we’ are virtual guests Fim basically told us to get our own coffee.  Luckily for me, I was.  Anyways, in one of the episodes previous to that, Bre gave a shout to Episode 14, One 4 the Horde, where Sy and myself sat down with them to talk about this here blog.  The reference, of course, was to the double ding, and all the joking we did about that while talking about the recruit a friend. Well, I has a confession.  I had one last linked account available before the holidays and I rocked it, Alliance style. Yes, its true, For the Horde has dirty ally alts.  I decided to run up two Pally’s a Dwarf and a Human.  Me Dwarf Pally, Bannock, he’s a Protadin, and my Human Pally, Ambrosius, he’s Healadin.  After hitting 80 within 10 days of Wrath, I found that I was extremely bored.  Most guildies were only level 72 at the time and I didn’t have much to do at 80.  Being on a brand new realm, there wasn’t a lot of options for PUGs, at least not Horde side and so I got extremely bored very quick.  I suppose I could’ve got started on one of my other Horde 70s, caught up to all of my guildies and started running low level instances, but after powering through Northrend in 10 days, I didn’t feel like rushing right back into leveling so quickly.  So I decided to use up the last few weeks of my triple xp from recruit a friend doing the one thing I’ve never been able to do before, namely, level Alliance side.

With that, my two Ally Pallys were born.  I think I only spent about two or three weeks on them, and they are now currently sitting at level 62 or 63.  Nominally, I was taking a break from the game, playing much less than I normally do.  It allowed me to recharge after the powerleveling of Brak.  But it also let me see some things from the other faction that I’d never experienced before.  What did I find?  Well, I’m probably going to forget a lot of the stuff since its no longer fresh in my mind, but here’s a college try.

1. The Horde raids Ironforge.  A LOT!  Pretty much every time I went back to IF to train, work on professions, or sell anything on the AH, IF was getting raiding.  It was quite funny, and annoying.  During one raid I actually saw one of my guildies in the throne room.

2. The Horde gets stomped in Ironforge.  A LOT!  Pretty much ever IF raid I witnessed ended in abysmal failure.  Now, I know there are Hordies on my server who have their Black War Bear and completed the ‘For The Horde’ achievement, but it seemed that every time they were in IF, they pretty much got stomped down.  Including my guildie.  Now, my guildie is what BRK would term a ‘cockroach’ class, so he lasted for quite a while.  He was the last one standing, I believe, during that particular raid, but he still got put down like the rest.

3. Things aren’t as one sided as they originally appear.  There is the ‘belief’ on the Horde side, that Blizz loves the Alliance and that the Horde is like the ugly stepchild.  (My apologies to stepchildren, you’re all beautiful in my books).  But not like this stepchild, who wasn’t really ugly… Wait a minute, where was I going with this?  Oh yeah.  Anyways, there are a lot of things that appeared to be favored to the Alliance while playing for the Horde.  At the same time, there seems to be a similar feeling while playing the Alliance.  I guess its like the whole question of which class is OP.  If every class is complaining that another class is OP, then Blizz has done something right in balancing them all together.  Similarly, if both factions complain that the other is getting preferential treatment, then obviously they’re just two spoiled siblings both wanting their parents love and affection.  Good jorb blizz. Yes, I said jorb.  Shout out Nim!

4. Things are pretty similar, and yet different.  A lot of quests from neutral areas are similar.  Even quests with two different quest givers (one for each faction) can be pretty darn close.  That being said, its nice to go to a zone that is basically an Alliance zone (ie, Wetlands) and get pretty different quest chains from what is avail Horde side.  Now, different is a relative term.  You’re still going on to get object ‘A’, or kill mob ‘B’ for NPC ‘C’, but the story behind why you’re doing generic quest # 3,752 for that specific NPC is generally different, and thats cool.

5.  Alliance architecture pwns Horde architecture, hands down, IMO.  I don’t know if anyone will agree with this, because aesthetics are generally such a subjective topic, and maybe I’ve just grown so used to all the standard Horde architecture that a change was nice, but I love Alliance towns.  Basically, anything that is a Big Honking Castle is cool.  (Your UFI for the day: Big Honking ____ is a standard military term. At least around here.  I’m going to need some independent verification if I’m going to confirm that this is Pan-NATO terminology.)

6. Writing RP stories for Alliance based characters seems easier.  At least for me.  I’ve written some (as of yet unpublished) RP stories based around my two Ally Pallys and intertwined in WoW Lore from WC3 through to WOTLKEE and its golden as far as I’m concerned.  The hard part is working in any Horde involvement to these stories. That being said, my favorite WoW fiction novels are still “Rise of the Horde” and “Lord of the Clans”.  I don’t know, I’d like to work in my Horde characters before I finalize the stories, but it ain’t easy.

Right now, I’m in a bit of a doldrum trying to figure out what I want to do next in game.  I think the problem is that I have too many options.  Stupid altaholism going and making me have to decide stuffs.  Anyways, I’m thinking that Juris, my BElf Pally, is next on the levelling express.  We’ll see what happens.

Email Question and Recruit a Friend

Posted in Alts, Discussion, Leveling, Recruit a Friend on October 6, 2008 by Kor

So the other day I received our second email question EVAR!  Okay, so not a huge deal, but I was super excited.  Matthias and Emi wrote asking:

Hello, I have found good info for me on your site. :) I was wondering if the 90 day bonus counts for all characters or only for 1? The Blizzard site isn’t clear for me and the Zhevra mount, how is it used? Mailed as an item? Can it be given to the friend or how does it work all together?

Thanks from Matth & Emi :)

So I did edit the question a bit, but I assure you I can haz permissions!

Well to the question.  First of all, a great big thanks to Matthias and Emi for taking the time to read the blog.  Its always nice to know there are real people out there on the intertubes.

On to Recruit a friend.  The recruit a friend applies to all characters that are on the two linked accounts.  So if Emi recruits Matthias, then it would count for every character on her account and his.  Now a few things about that.  If the level differences between the two characters is more than 7, they won’t get triple xp for killing mobs (if the mobs are grey to one toon, neither gets 3x xp).  So if she ran a 70 with a level 1 toon, it wouldn’t work.  If they started together, then it will.

The Zhevra mount is given to the account that recruited the friend.  So if Emi recruited Matthias, then her account would be given the mount.  It is equivalent to a level 60 epic riding mount.  Once the new account has paid for a two month subscription, Emi can go on to her account management page on the Blizzard website and select one of her toons to give the mount to.  It will then show up in her mail box.  It’s soulbound, so it can’t be traded and she’ll only get it once.  So she should be sure of which toon she wants it on before she chooses.

Other than that, there’s a few more neat things.  The grant a level ability is really cool.  Matthias’ account will be able to grant any toon on Emi’s account a free level for every two levels he gets, up to level 60.  So if his toon hits 30, he can grant one of her toons from level 1 to level 15.  If he hit 60, he can grant from 1-30 or 30-59, etc.

A few last things, they should have each other in their friends list and be partied together to get the triple xp (and to be able to summon each other).  The 3x xp has range restrictions, which I’ve found to be about 30 yards, so if she turns a quest in when he’s outside that range, she’ll miss out on the triple xp and just get regular xp.  Same for killing mobs.  They also get triple rep bonuses while they’re grouped and they won’t use up any rested bonus either.

Hope that clears a few things up.  I’ve found the Recruit a Friend promotion to be both fun and expensive.  Since I’ve started, I’ve managed to level:
Enhance Shaman, 60
Resto Shaman, 60
Demo Warlock, 60
Prot Pally, 63
Ret Pally, 24
BM Hunter, 37
Sutblety Rogue, 43
Assasin Rogue, 39
Fury Warrior, 30
Holy Priest, 30
So I realize there is a huge bit of altaholism in there.  I know, I’m an addict.  To be fair though, so of those were leveled only to help my friend get a few toons up and some are the ones I dual box with that I just haven’t finished yet.
I’m hoping to get a Rogue, Warrior and Priest up to 60 before the promotion ends, and eventually I’m going to try my hand at trip boxing the two Shammys and Warlock from 60-70.  I’m waiting on getting the Dreadsteed, which is a long, expensive quest.
